A Hifz course is a structured programme for memorizing the whole Quran (114 surahs, 6,236 ayahs and 30 juz) by heart with correct Tajweed. A teacher hears your new lesson, corrects mistakes and plans your revision. Someone who completes it is called a Hafiz (male) or Hafizah (female).

Most students take 2 to 5 years, depending on age, daily study time and reading fluency. The Quran has 604 pages, so one new page a day takes about 20 months of new memorization, plus revision time. A steady pace with strong daily revision usually gives better long-term retention than a rushed one.

These are the three parts of a Hifz lesson. Sabaq is the new lesson. Sabqi is recent revision of the last few days. Manzil is long-term revision of everything already memorized. Good Hifz plans include all three every day.
